What does the name Shattercone mean?
A "shatter cone" is a geological feature associated with the high pressures caused by a meteorite impact. They are known to exist in only a few areas of the world, including the Sudbury Basin. The Sudbury Basin is 62 km long, 30 km wide and 15 km deep. It was created as the result of a large meteorite impact that occurred some 1.85 billion years ago. A shatter cone is a conically shaped structure that formed in the bedrock directly beneath the point of impact. Shatter cones radiate in a distinctive pattern from the point of impact. The name Shattercone was selected for our business to reflect this unique feature and link us to Sudbury.
What does your logo represent?
Shattercone's logo is a stylized drawing of a 3 phase AC electric arc furnace. The horizontal bar at the top represents a rock bolt, one of Mansour Group's main products.
Is Shattercone Metallurgical Inc. more than just an autocat broker?
Yes Shattercone actually operates full scale electric arc furnaces to smelt autocats, producing an end product that is suitable for final refining at major PGM refineries around the world.
What can you smelt/melt besides autocats?
We can smelt other catalysts including nickel, nickel/cobalt, and PGM-bearing catalysts. In addition, we can melt nickel alloy and nickel scrap for sampling or process needs.
I only have whole converters, not de-canned autocats. Is Shattercone still interested?
Yes, we are still interested in buying this material but we will charge a fee to de-can the catalyst, and then we will weigh, crush and sample the material in accordance with standard industry practice to determine payment value. Minimum lot size is 2000 lbs of catalyst, or roughly 1000 whole converters.
